It is a theoretical-practical course that develops the theoretic fundamentals of materials mechanics in the particular the case of rock masses in which excavations are carried out, whether in superficial or underground. The basic concepts on which rock mechanics is based are identified and explained, starting with the collection of geotechnical geological information, in order to characterize the rock mass, the determination of its physical and mechanical properties and the concepts of in-situ and induced stress. The course includes theoretical lectures and practical sessions, where geomechanical models are built using Rocscience software. The course allows the student to do geomechanics modeling and evaluate the stability of underground excavations and rock slopes, helping the student to develop abilities for problem-solving and teamwork skills. It also includes activities for academic texts drafting and oral communication in related topics.
